Nerul woman avails Chalazion Surgery from AEHI

humour34-year-old Sanchit Rastogi* was a confident man and would find humour in every situation of his life. And that made him popular in his workplace and residential apartment. However, his focus started changing as he started developing repeated boils on his eye lids. They were painful in the beginning and then would just stay there as a lump.

After contemplating for two months, he decided to visit an eye doctor before it became worse. Based on his family doctor’s recommendation he booked an appointment with eye specialists at Advanced Eye Hospital & Institute (AEHI) located in Sanpada, Navi Mumbai.

On appointment day, Sanchit was referred to Dr. Akshay Nair, an Oculoplastic Surgeon specialising in treatment of the eyelid at AEHI. He then observed that his visual acuity in both eyes were 6/9. Eye pressure was in normal limits.  However, his lower and upper eyelids were filled with multiple Chalazion. Hence, Sanchit was diagnosed with Chalazion in both eyes.

Dr. Akshay prescribed few lubricating eye drops along with eye ointment. Before this, Sanchit was asked to apply hot compress on his eyelids atleast 3 times a day. He was then asked to follow up after a month.

A Chalazion is usually painless lump, on your eyelids. Typically, the abnormal or dysfunction in the oil gland i.e. meibomian glands that produces oil in our eye is the most common cause. It may occur in upper or lower eyelid and is often confused with stye. A stye is an eye infection of the oil gland that involves eyelash, and sweat gland. Other causes of Chalazion are inflammation and viral infection of the meibomian glands.

After a month, when Sanchit eye were examined by Dr. Akshay, he observed that the Chalazion on the upper eyelids were resolving but lower eyelids were not.

Dr. Akshay advised him to undergo Incision and curettage of eyelid chalazion in both eyes and Intralesional steroid in upperlid of his right eye.

Sanchit didn’t want to prolong the treatment and decided to undergo the procedure which was performed subsequently after obtaining his consent.

After three weeks, Sanchit’s eye examination revealed that his eyelid health was resolving. He was further asked to continue with the eye drops  and the hot fomentation so as to reduce the possibility of future recurrence.

Young people like Sanchit should reduce the temptation of rubbing their eyes. Eyelid infections like chalazion can happen due to many reasons common ones being dry eyes, eye strain, residual refractive error, genetic tendency etc. It is a wise move to get your eyes thoroughly checked so as to rule out any of the known causes for the same.
