Based on recommendation from office colleagues, 28-year-old Chitra Bansode* from Alibag presented at Advanced Eye Hospital Institute (AEHI) located at Sanpada, Navi Mumbai with the eye complaint of fluctuating and blurry vision.
Chitra underwent a detailed eye check-up at AEHI wherein along with Visual Acuity testing, Retinal examination was also conducted. The eye pressure was well within the normal range. Visual acuity test showed that she had myopia i/e. nearsightedness of minus 12-eye power in both eyes. Retina and other structures were within the normal limits.
Chitra was referred to Dr. Vinayak Damagude, a Cornea & Cataract specialist at AEHI, who then observed her dilated pupil through the slit lamp. Chitra’s natural lens was dislocated due to which her eyes couldn’t focus properly and hence gave blurry vision. Hence, he diagnosed her with Marfan syndrome.
Marfan syndrome is an inherited autosomal dominant disease that mainly affects our muscles, skeleton, heart, and eyes. This genetic disorder occurs due to a mutation of a protein that makes connective tissue. The zonules that hold our natural lens are made up of connective tissue. Hence, when a patient suffers from this disorder, the lens usually slips upwards and outwards due to weakening and stretching of inferior zonules. This in turn induces myopia and blurriness for distance vision and very rarely impacts near vision as well in advanced stages of lens subluxation. People suffering from Marfans are typically tall and thin with long extremities.
When lens is displaced, especially in both eyes and are either progressive or non-progressive, this eye condition is defined Ectopia lentis, which is characteristic diagnosis of Marfan syndrome.
Chitra was recommended with new prescription of eyeglasses.
Patients suffering Marfan syndrome are advised to follow up life long as the risk of complications in the eye including risk of retinal complications are high and they need constant monitoring to decide the right stage of treatment.
Further, Chitra was also recommended with good geneticist and orthopaedic surgeon for treating her muscles and joints problem.
