A Raigad Boy Regains Normal Vision After Corneal Eye Surgery

16-year-old Kalpesh Bhargav* (name changed to  protect patient’s identity), a resident of Raigad, was a bright intelligent child but was shy. He had a younger brother – Monu with whom he always used to play. Once their parents were out of town, the brother duo had out-an-out gala time. After playing chess, crosswords, and other such games, little brother got bored. So he insisted him to play pen-fight with him like how his brother’s age boys did. Kaplesh agreed on the condition that it will be for short duration. Both agreed! Due to shortage of pens, they included pencils as well and then the fight began!

Within minutes, Monu threw the pencil so excitedly that it directly poked into Kalpesh’s left eye like a bullet.

As Kalpesh screamed in eye pain, terrified Monu ran out of the house to call neighbouring aunt. As soon as his aunt learnt about the eye injury, she immediately took both brothers and drove to Advanced Eye Hospital & Institute (AEHI) in Sanpada, Navi Mumbai. She asked for urgent help and completed all the formalities.

Initial eye examination showed that his left eye visual acuity was reduced to finger counting close to face while the right eye was normal.

Initial eye examination showed that his left eye visual acuity was reduced to finger counting close to face while the right eye was normal.

Although, Fundus examination was normal in the right eye, but it could not be seen in the left eye.

Dr. Swati Gupta, an eye specialist for Cornea and LASIK, further examined Kalpesh’s eye on Slit-lamp examination which revealed a full thickness tear on the cornea. A part of pencil lead was noticed in the anterior chamber. It seemed that pencil lead had pierced his cornea and part of it remained inside the eye. She also advised a gentle ultrasound (b-scan) for scanning of vitreous body and retina, which was found to be normal.

Hence, Dr. Swati advised the aunt to let Kalpesh undergo an operation requiring surgical removal of the foreign body and repair of the corneal perforation.

The aunt was convinced after listening to the eye doctor. She quickly spoke to Kalpesh’s parents, appraised them of the situation and took their consent. The surgery was carried out to remove the fragment of pencil lead and the cornea was closed with couple of sutures.

As Kalpesh’s parents returned home that evening, they were extremely grateful towards their neighbour for taking care of their sons.

Dr. Gupta prescribed him with eye drops to prevent infection and reduce inflammation. Over next several months, the cornea and anterior chamber was regularly monitored and all the sutures were removed. Kalpesh regained normal vision with a minor glass power. Kalpesh’s parents and their neighbour thanked Dr. Swati for recommending the appropriate and best possible treatment for his eye injury.

Corneal perforations need an immediate surgery.  A cornea specialist is more trained in deciding the appropriate treatment for these kinds of corneal perforations.
