Eye pain resolved by an orbit surgery

Winding up all the duties, Chandu*, a 22 year-old young delivery boy left his office. In a jiffy, he and his office colleague wore helmet and headed towards their respective homes riding his motorbike. After a few kilometres, little did he know that this feeling of being content on completing the routine work was short-lived. Within seconds, a heavy loaded lorry in a broad day light lost control only to run into Chandu’s bike. Pedestrians froze on the spot to watch the two vehicles collide. The impact was significant and a large amount of glass pieces scattered around the accident site.

Chandu sustained an injury as well and some glass pieces entered his left eye. Hours later, a nearby eye hospital operated him to remove the glass pieces from his left eye. Fast forward to a month, Chandu continued to experience pain and heaviness in his left eye. His office colleagues noticed that he was avoiding visiting an eye doctor to cure this pain.

On continued insistence from his office colleague, Chandu finally visited Dr. Akshay Nair, an Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeon at AEHI. Chandu wanted to know the reasons for the persistent pain around the eyes and of course wanted to get rid of it once and for all.

Dr. Akshay Nair suspected that something is probably still present deep in the eye socket and hence advised him to undergo CT scan. And as suspected CT scan revealed presence of a large glass piece that was still laying embedded deep within his eye socket (orbit). Thereafter, Dr. Nair and his team performed an exploration surgery called orbitotomy to identify and remove this foreign body. This whole procedure was completed within an hour, where they removed this large glass piece. Orbitotomy is a procedure which is also done for thyroid eye disease, eye cancers, facial fractures etc. Orbitotomy is performed by eye doctors who have special training in lid and orbital surgeries like Dr. Nair.

It is important to understand that no eye problem is a trivial problem. Even though Chandu’s vision wasn’t affected but that retained glass piece caused him persistent agony and pain. Even minor issues like redness, irritation, pain or intermittent inability to see well may seem like minor problems but the importance of visiting an eye doctor cannot be over emphasized.
