What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a condition that causes damage to your eye’s optic nerve which occurs due to a buildup of pressure inside your eye also known as intra-ocular pressure.
What is IOP (intra-ocular pressure) or eye pressure?
The eye pressure or intra-ocular pressure is the fluid pressure in the eye.
Mrs. Sunita Nair (Name changed); 37 yrs old; female and a single mom was surprised when she found out she had glaucoma. She was amazed to know that there is more than just blood pressure issues in life. This was the first time she heard of problems in the eye pressure and a disorder related to it.
Sunita wanted to share her story of glaucoma to help others. Sunita had glasses for about 10 years; but off late she had issues with her vision. She felt her vision grew narrow and had frequent headaches. At first she ignored it; but later it became an issue as she found difficulty in doing daily chores. She would find it difficult to drive her kid to school and back, difficulty in crossing roads and cooking. Sunita was heartbroken as she felt she was going blind. Her best friend was worried about her and suggested to take an appointment at the best eye hospital in Navi Mumbai; Advanced Eye Hospital and Institute (AEHI).
Sunita too knew about AEHI since she had taken her mother for cataract surgery and was very satisfied with the hospital. She knew AEHI had the best eye specialist in navi Mumbai who are trained at the best institutes and have world class tehnology.
Sunita promptly booked an appointment and came to AEHI and got her eye check up done. During her preliminary eye checkup; it was found that her eye pressure was raised than the normal (upto 22mm of Hg).
Dr. Mishra suggested that her eye pressure can be brought in control with the help of eye drops. These eye-drops were given to lower the eye pressure by relaxing the eye muscles to allow better drainage of the fluid thereby improving the outflow of fluid and not allowing the pressure to built up. Sunita was happy that her problem can be taken care with eye drops.
It has been 2 years now that Sunita is living with her glaucoma. She mentions how for many years, her maternal grandmother had an eye condition for which she was on some eye drops but it wasn’t util she visited AEHI that she understood her grandmother had been suffering from glaucoma. She was surprised how glaucoma runs in the family. No one ever thought such a disease could be hereditary.
Is glaucoma hereditary?
Glaucoma is of 2 types:
- Primary open angle
- Closed angle glaucoma.
The most common type of glaucoma i.e. primary open-angle glaucoma, is hereditary. If members of your immediate family have glaucoma, you are at a much higher risk than the rest of the population.
In her recent follow-up she was very happy with staffs at AEHI and Dr. Rajesh Mishra in helping her out with her glaucoma. She says ” Earlier I used to be scared while driving as I couldn’t see anything on the sides of my vision but now my vision is much better and its all because of Dr. Rajesh and AEHI. I can see clearly without any pain and my eye pressure has been under control with the eye drops. I would recommend all to get regular eye check-ups and always take an expert eye surgeons opinion.”
