A 60 yr. old female Mrs. Kalli bai Kushwaha, a resident of Madhya Pradesh had been having issues with her right eye wherein she complained of an unbearable pricking pain and tearing from the right eye. Things worsened when she noticed her vision started to go bad in her right eye which alarmed her.

She went on to further elaborate her journey from Madhya Pradesh to Mumbai. Mrs Kalli bai explained that for the past one year she was having irritation, pricking sensation, blurred vision in her right eye. She visited an eye surgeon in Madhya Pradesh wherein the eye surgeon advised her eye drops which gave her relief for few days; but she never recovered from her complaints. Days were passing by and she was getting tensed and would often be depressed for she couldn’t see. Her quality of life was compromised to such an extent that she became dependent on family members to walk in her own house as she would end up hurting herself. She says she is blessed to have a husband like hers who was always a moral support and helped her through her daily chores especially her kitchen time.

Mrs Kalli bai met many eye specialists who gave her eye drops, which only gave temporary relief. The eye drops would relief her for 2-3 days but again the pricking sensation would continue leaving her eye red. She was told that if her problems continued; she could probably end up blind in right eye. Having lost her left eye 12 years ago to cataract had rendered her blind in one eye and she couldn’t afford loosing the only normal right eye.

Having to depend on someone for every step that she took made her feel like a burden. She started caging herself and was confined to her bedroom for 8 months. The feeling of being dependent pushed her in to depression. Her daughter who resides in Navi Mumbai couldn’t see her mother suffer this way. She immediately flew to Madhya Pradesh to get her mother to Mumbai. She faced a lot of resistance since Mrs. Kalli bai in the past had gotten her eye examined at many eye centres, but all the eye specialists informed her that nothing can be done to save her right eye. Mrs. Kalli Bai had lost all her hopes of getting back her vision.

It was only after a week of persuasion Mrs. Kalli bai agreed to fly to Mumbai to try her luck at the best eye hospital in Navi Mumbai- Advanced Eye hospital and Institute (AEHI) located at Sanpada, Navi Mumbai.

On reaching AEHI, Mrs Kalli bai went through series of eye examination and had her consultation with the best eye doctor in Mumbai-Dr. Vandana Jain, Cornea and Cataract Specialist.  Dr. Vandana Jain examined her eye and explained what was going wrong with her right eye and gave her the news of a lifetime-her right eye can be saved. She can see the world again with her right eye.

Dr. Vandana Jain diagnosed it as a condition wherein the blebs formed in the eye cells damage the cornea (transparent layer covering the eye) leading to vision loss.  Dr. Vandana Jain told her that corneal transplantation (It’s a procedure in which the patients damaged cornea is removed and replaced with a normal cornea from a donor’s eye) was the only way out. She discussed about the eye operation taking time to explain each and every step of corneal transplant. Mrs. Kalli bai and her family were worried as to where they would get a donor for cornea transplant. Dr. Vandana Jain again came to their rescue and told them about centres that do eye donation which the eye staff team at AEHI will pursue.  With this new ray of hope they went home. As soon as they reached home they got a call from AEHI that a donor is available and they can get the surgery done.

They not only felt lucky but blessed that they were confident that they are indeed at the best eye hospital in Mumbai and in the hands of the best eye specialist Dr. Vandana Jain. She was scheduled immediately the next day for corneal transplant eye operation.

Dr. Vandana Jain operated on her right eye and the operation was successful.  Mrs Kalli bai had to wait in recovery room for about 3 hours for observation before getting discharged for home. She was advised eye drops and medication for healing. During her follow up visit, Mrs. Kalli Bai’s happiness knew no boundaries. She was finally free from the pricking sensation and was very happy to finally see the world clearly and become independent. Mrs Kalli bai is very thankful to Dr. Vandana Jain’s skillful hands and AEHI hospital for saving her eye.
